The IBM R40
notebook is ideal for mobile users who want cutting edge notebook
computing in a sturdy frame. With the recent announcement of the
IBM ThinkPad R50, we're not sure how much longer the R40 model
will be available but that's not to say that the R40 doesn't
still have much to offer. Those who travel around and like to use their machines whilst on the go, will be happy with the solid construction of the IBM R40 Thinkpad. It's not as heavy as the A31 but at 6.8lbs it's not feather light either, but that's a tradeoff for the power. Either way you may want to factor these variables in when looking at this model. This is one tough laptop that should hold up to bangs and scratches that can happen whilst travelling on the road. The IBM R40 also has excellent battery life. In short people looking for a solid, reliable system, with desktop capabilities, will be suited to the IBM R40 Thinkpad. At the time of this review (feb 2004) we found an R40 for under a thousand dollars using the notebook finder search at ibm.com. Also if you buy directly from them you can build your own IBM laptop and configure it to meet your personal computing needs.
