The Dell
Latitude D600 and the other members of the D series are the first
Pentium-M based laptops from Dell. The D600 Dell is positioned
between the D500 and the D800, and offers a balance between
portability and performance. The chassis design, using aluminum,
steel and magnesium alloy, gives the machine an efficient and
professional appearance. The Dell D600 notebook is powered by either 1.3 GHz, 1.4 GHz, 1.6 GHz or 1,7GHz versions of Intel's Pentium M Processor, so the performance is very reliable, able to handle college and small business needs. As always if you buy directly from Dell they make it easy to upgrade the laptop when you order. Available upgrades include increasing RAM, hard drive size, and adding a faster processor etc.The reviewed D600 Dell came with the standard 30GB hard drive but larger 40GB and 60GB, and 80GB hard drives are available. If you buy directly from Dell the price for one of these machines ranges from $1,149 - $2000 and above, depending on the upgrades you choose. Powered by a 32MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 chip, the graphics sub system of the Dell D600 should be enough to cope with most games currently available on the market, though hardline gamers would be more likely to shell out for an Alienware Area-51m Professional Gaming Laptop. This system comes with a single Type II card slot and a slot for an integrated Smart Card reader, plus the IR port and two audio ports. The rear panel supports all the the other portsincluding two USB 2.0, a single LAN, modem, parallel, serial and VGA ports and an S-Video port. If you decide to use an external mouse and/or keyboard, remember these will have to be USB items. The latitude D600 like many new dell laptops does not come with a standard floppy drive. The solution for those who need a floppy drive is to connect one using USB. The 4,400mAh battery provides on average over 4 hours of battery life, more than enough to keep you working during most airport delays or during a moderate train journey. Overall the Dell D600 is a fine machine with solid performance, though probably more suited for college student, or small business use than as a laptop for a hard line gaming enthusiast.
